We’re Rowena Straylight

Amanda Brown, voice of Rowena Straylight here, telling you about us. While Rowland and I never expected we would be working together on music, from two different continents (not even the same countries we were both in when we originally met.) We have found such enrichment in working together to create new music. Coming from two completely different musical backgrounds, sometimes communication could be dicey as we worked to learn the lingo of the other’s craft to specify what we were hoping for. What we originally thought might just be a fun little collaboration, one time thing between us, turned into something so much more.

While constantly challenging each other musically, we’ve also been pushed to evolve (or at least I have!) The sound we started with wasn’t what we decided we wanted to achieve, and while high and breathy and beautiful (like Kate Bush) can be wonderful, it wasn’t quite the right fit. Developing a different sound has taken work, both from me as a vocalist and Rowland as a musician, changing to play something a little more symphonic. As we’ve continued to flourish, finding where we belong, we’ve also found more of ourselves in our music, and our aesthetic. Rowland originally jokingly said I could totally rock as “Disney Princess Goth” but it has become something that looks and feels simply me.

We intend to have our second single out in the near future, but if you’re wondering about this breathy sound we started with, described by some as like Kate Bush and Inkubus Sukkubus had a baby, you can find our debut single, Waiting for the Dawn, on YouTube and Bandcamp, and almost everywhere else that music is sold.
